South African Krugerrands
The South African Krugerrand is a 22-karat (.9167 purity) coin weighing a total 1.0909 ounces (or 33.930 grams). One troy ounce of pure gold and 2.826 grams of a copper make an alloy that gives the coins a unique orange-gold hue and increased durability.
The Krugerrands were first struck in 1967, the first gold bullion coins to contain one troy ounce of gold. The decision to issue coins as legal tender allowed the South African government to market the coins to US private investors who at the time were banned from ownership of gold bullion, but allowed to purchase gold coins.
Like other gold bullion coins, Krugerrands are available in 1 ounce, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce sizes.
